HORMONE HEALTH
Considering testosterone therapy? Why the evaluation comes first
Fatigue, lower libido, mood changes, and reduced strength can have many causes, so a single low testosterone result is not enough to diagnose testosterone deficiency. The Endocrine Society and American Urological Association recommend pairing compatible symptoms or signs with consistently low levels, confirmed with repeat early-morning testing.
A thoughtful evaluation also looks for why testosterone may be low. That can include a review of medications, sleep, weight and chronic health conditions, plus selected testing to distinguish testicular from pituitary or hypothalamic causes. Fertility plans matter too: external testosterone can suppress sperm production, so anyone who wants to preserve fertility should discuss that before treatment begins.
For appropriately diagnosed hypogonadism, testosterone therapy may improve certain symptoms, but it is not a general anti-aging treatment. In 2025, the FDA removed older boxed-warning language about increased cardiovascular outcomes after reviewing a large safety trial, while also requiring class-wide warnings about possible increases in blood pressure. Follow-up commonly includes symptom review and monitoring such as blood pressure, blood counts, and prostate-related testing when appropriate.
Global Medical Excellence offers hormone therapy evaluation as part of its lifestyle medicine services. If symptoms are persistent or prior testing was abnormal, bring your symptom timeline, medication and supplement list, earlier lab results, and fertility goals to a physician visit. Explore our lifestyle medicine services and schedule a conversation when an individualized evaluation would be useful.
